The basic sets of tiles are Bamboos, Circles, Characters, Dragons, Winds, Flowers, Dragons, and Seasons. In a mahjongg Game Set there are four pieces of each of these tiles, that is, there are four White Dragons, four Green Dragons, and four Red Dragons:

Mahjong sets are mainly colored using only three colors: Red, Blue and Green. Red signifies blood and therefore Mankind and more generally Life. Blue signifies the sky, the Heavens and therefore dignity and purity. Green symbolizes the Earth and nature, fertility and natural richness.
